Big Issue illustrator draws up more success in US award

Following Ollie Hirst’s recognition last week, Giovanni Da Re’s remarkable illustration of two fathers – one Israeli, one Palestinian – has scooped an American prize

We are delighted to reveal that Giovanni Da Re’s incredible Divided Loyalties design exclusively for The Big Issue has won a prestigious American illustration award.

Giovanni’s illustration demonstrated the harrowing reality of two fathers – one Israeli, one Palestinian – who are divided by the nations in which they live but are united by their experiences of conflict and grief. The design featured in The Big Issue back in February, accompanying Stephen Bush’s review of Colum McCann’s novel Apeirogon.

And it has just been awarded top spot in AI-AP’s American Illustration 39 competition, a result that Giovanni insisted he is “really, really happy” about.

The success comes a week after another Big Issue contributor Ollie Hirst received news that he was on the long-list for a World Illustration Award.

If you want to read Stephen Bush’s review of Apeirogon, head here. He said he was: “intrigued by the idea but the execution didn’t work” for the book – the same can’t be said for Giovani’s top-notch illustration. Congratulations Giovanni!
