Street Art: ‘Survival Girl’ is a painting of truth and resilience

The Big Issue’s Street Art page gives talented, marginalised individuals an outlet for creative expression

‘Survival Girl’

By Christie Cassisa

Frequent Street Art contributor Christie came from an abusive childhood, and as an adult has struggled with depression, alcohol and drug problems and homelessness. She discovered art in school as a means of escape and expression. She took this painting “unfinished” to the Jealous Gallery in London, for an art workshop organised by The Big Issue together with renowned artist Charming Baker.

“Charming liked the painting as it was,” Christie explains. “He was concerned that if I finished it, I would lose the detail of the silver necklace. I understood what he meant and I made sure I kept the raw spontaneous feel. In this painting I have captured the look of my friend, who has suffered a lot of life trauma. I see a girl who is a survivor and still open hearted enough to offer her truth to others.”
