Top 5 books to lure you from your phone as chosen by Lee Woodgate

Lee Woodgate AKA Son of Alan specialises in witty editorial illustrations and instructional infographics. He chooses five books to lure you away from our obsession with the tiny screen

The Hobbit
JRR Tolkien

My favourite book. Everyone needs to take a step away from the stresses of the modern world from time to time, and there are few better characters to hang out with (and tolearn from) than Bilbo Baggins.

1984
George Orwell

The Ministry of Truth, the thought police, Big Brother is watching you! Orwell has been warning us for years about the few having too much power over the masses. A relevant book for our times. An absolute corker in fact.

Moon Shot
Dan Parry

One of the best books I’ve read in the past five years. It follows the quest to put men on the moon. The actual landing is so tense. Armstrong and Adrin were able to plonk that Eagle down safely, despite the fact that their feeble computers completely malfunctioned. It leaves you with a comforting sense that humans really are amazing.

Pride and Prejudice
Jane Austen

A masterpiece. Delete all of your social media now and still get your fix of gossip and scandal but with a lesson thrown in at the end.

On the Road
Jack Kerouac

People used to get up to some very cool stuff before selfies and social media were a thing. I’m certain that there is no way Jack Kerouac or Dean Moriarty would have been seen dead with a smartphone. They were too busy living life to the full.
