Morrissey wants to be loved – show him you care with our exclusive Moz merch

Ahead of the release of England Is Mine, the biopic of the enigmatic Smiths icon – we speak to the duo behind the movie and showcase our exclusive range of Moz merchandise

Is he a spokesman for a generation – or just an offensive miserabilist? Morrissey continues to divide opinion. Director Mark Gill and actor Jack Lowden spoke to The Big Issue about bringing ‘Weird Steven’ Patrick Morrissey to the big screen in the biopic England Is Mine.

In the interview, Gill and Lowden discuss their thoughts on the “cantankerous British icon”.

“I think he genuinely wants to be loved,” said Gill ahead of the release of the biopic. “And I think what he’s forgotten is that he is.”

“I’d love him to love it but at the same time I don’t care, if I’m being honest,” says star Jack Lowden, who plays Moz (pictured below), revealing that Morrissey was contacted several times throughout the film’s production but has yet to reply.

The affable ying to Morrissey’s surly yang, Johnny Marr was more generous with the Gill and Lowden at Manchester International Festival earlier this year.

“He was genuinely warm and genuinely flattered that we’d made a film about them,” the director reveals. “And he had nothing but nice things to say. He said he’s heard good things about it, and wants to see it. And I just said, ‘Well look, thanks for changing my life.’ And he gave me a big hug.”
