Letters: If unpaid carers stopped caring, people would die

In response to our recent feature on the unpaid workers keeping the nation running, readers had a few things to say

Big Issue readers respond to our articles about what would happen if unpaid carers stopped caring and property tax, and there’s a special message from our new cover star Yungblud…

We asked what happens if the unpaid carers stop caring?

Unpopular opinion, but if they stopped caring no one else would step up, a lot of people would probably die and the rich at the top won’t even notice because they make their money from the workers either way. If governments actually cared, the systems would be in place to support these people, and they wouldn’t have to be fought for every election.

@rebeccabtraveller

Carers are the backbone that no one sees or doesn’t want to see. It’s an inconvenient truth that the government doesn’t want to talk about.

Fair points

The idea of Fairer Share to impose a flat rate property tax overlooks an important point. I live in a small cottage that I bought 38 years ago for £70k. I work as a gardener on a fairly low income. I drive a small 19-year-old car; don’t crave expensive holidays and luxuries. However, through no fault of my own, I now live in a “fashionable” Cotswold village and my home probably has a market value of £500k. It is irrelevant to me as I have no desire to sell.

My current council tax gives me very little. The bins are emptied, policing is poor and the roads are like cart tracks! A possible doubling of my council tax would be grossly unfair. We’re not all millionaires in the Cotswolds.

A message from Yungblud

I’m on the cover of Big Issue this week. This magazine is so important to me, they have been my friends for a while and every magazine purchased goes towards helping the homeless across the UK. If you see a Big Issue vendor on the streets across the tour or out and about, go say hello, spread love and purchase a magazine from them. All my love.

Here’s what readers have had to say about this week’s Yunglbud cover so far…

Yungblud, Facebook

Always buy Big Issue! It’s a living for people who have to buy it in order to sell it! Come rain or shine they are out there trying to make a living.

Kate Auld

York has an amazing Big Issue seller. He dances all day to entertain, attract and probably keep warm in winter. A happy character.

Nicole Hingley

I found out about Big Issue in one of my favourite books, A Street Cat Named Bob. I am glad Yungblud supports it. I also hope he likes cats.

My late father was their accountant when the magazine first launched. Such a worthwhile cause.

Sam Marshall-Brown

Used to always get the Big Issue in the ’90s in London. Loved the music reviews, done with the best bands like Portishead, Massive Attack. Such a great publication.

Jo Scott

Such depths of kindness in this young man to support others. An old soul with talent making a difference.

Lovely example of art giving back. We are given our talents for a reason. It is our job to figure out not just how to share our talent but to find a way to make the world a better place. Good step in that direction.

Jessi James

Awesome. See a need, fill it – and right now all over every country, people are homeless or just three steps away from the streets. I know, I was one. Thank you for caring.

Amy Wadham

Bravo Yungblud. I love that you support this worthwhile magazine. When I lived in England I used to buy it all the time downtown. It’s very close to my heart. Kudos for getting your cheeky mug on the cover, mate.
