What homeless charities are there in Glasgow?

Whether you’re seeking help for yourself, someone you know or want to get involved by donating your time, there are a number of organisations and homeless charities in Glasgow that work with homeless people.

Simon Community

The charity works to combat the causes and effects of homelessness with the vision that ‘everyone should have a safe place to live and access to the support they need’.

Its innovative ways of helping Glasgow’s homeless community put people at the heart of everything it does including its Street Cycles team, kitted out with touring bikes loaded with food, clothing, needle-exchange kits and sleeping bags to reach the city’s outer areas and its portable mobile phone charger packs, which it hopes will keep rough sleepers in touch with potentially life-saving services.

Glasgow City Mission

Set up in 1826, Glasgow City Mission is considered to be one of the world’s first City Missions. Founder David Naismith wanted to use his social and Christian spiritual concerns to help the city’s people.

The mission provides practical help for vulnerable and disadvantage adults in children in Glasgow, not only those sleeping rough, but experiencing other kinds of homelessness, poverty, addiction or emotional issues as well as those seeking asylum.

Its City Centre Project is their first-stop support service, feeding an average of 130 men and women every evening, as well as helping them find accommodation and further food and wellbeing supplies.

The Mission recognises that providing basic sustenance is a short-term solution however and hope with its purpose-built centre it can tackle some of the bigger problems at the heart of the homelessness crisis. With a range of clubs, activities and one-to-one support the Mission hope to “build relationships of trust and earn the right to speak into their lives, and start them on their journey of life transformation.”

Shelter Scotland Glasgow Community Hub 

The Hub from the established housing charity Shelter Glasgow has helped thousands of families since it first opened in the early 1970s. Since moving to its newly-refurbished home last year the Hub now has around 60 staff and volunteers and hosts the charity’s free national helpline, digital chat advice service, solicitors and money, debt and housing advisors. It will also refer to local specialist services if you’re in need of more in-depth assistance.
