Einstein’s theory of gravity may have to be rewritten after scientists cast doubt on the genius physicist’s work.
Researchers found a gigantic ring of galaxies darting away from us much faster than predicted. The ring – a mere 10 million light years wide – is made up of small galaxies and is expanding rapidly like a mini Big Bang.
They believe our neighbouring galaxy, Andromeda, once zoomed close to our galaxy, creating a sling-shot of several small galaxies.
Dr Hongsheng Zhao, of St Andrews University, said: “If Einstein’s gravity were correct, our galaxy would never come close enough to Andromeda to scatter anything that fast.”
The bold claim is published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and if true will challenge mainstream thinking on gravity and the cosmos. Mr Einstein was unavailable for comment.
