Introducing the Top Changemakers of 2022

Editor Paul McNamee introduces The Big Issue’s Changemakers of 2022, the people and groups making a positive difference in the UK.

While Covid kept us apart last year, and brought uncertainty and grief, there were many shining lights. People across the UK worked tirelessly to make things better for those around them. They found ways to lift others out of hardship, to protect the future of the planet and to rail against government policies which threaten to force many beyond the margins.

Our annual Big Issue Changemakers list this year celebrates 100 of those who gave us reason to hope in 2021. We believe they will play an important role in making sure society in 2022 benefits everyone. We’re hailing the innovators and agitators who believe no one should live in poverty. We’re celebrating the individuals and organisations who look out for the less fortunate, not through any desire for praise but because they recognise an essential need.

Our list has many names of people and grassroots organisations who are quietly making their communities better, and who are deserving of so much praise. We also look to the experts and professionals who have used their resources to lift others up.

At any point, settling on just 100 people and organisations is not easy. And we know that we may have overlooked much valuable work. We welcome you telling us who else we should celebrate. We’ll be happy to celebrate them.

For now, let us all praise The Big Issue 100 Changemakers for 2022. They give us all reason to look optimistically ahead, and we’ll be publishing the articles for each section online across the week.
