Protest set to take place outside Downing Street demanding general election

Liz Truss’s successor will be the third different Conservative prime minister since Boris Johnson won a mandate in the 2019 general election

Protesters are planning to gather outside Downing Street to demand a general election after Liz Truss resigned and paved the way for the Conservative party to choose its third leader in as many years.

The general election protest will take place on November 5, with left-wing campaign group the People’s Assembly asking supporters to meet at Embankment in London at noon.

Meanwhile Twitter campaigner Politics4You gained traction calling for a protest on the same day outside Downing Street, saying: “Refuse to be silenced”.

Quitting after just 44 days in office, Truss said the party would choose a new leader next week.

Truss’s own administration veered away from the mandate Johnson won in 2019, including reneging on a manifesto promise not to support fracking and by announcing unfunded tax cuts.

With polls predicting a Conservative wipeout, opposition politicians have been quick to call for an election.

“The Tories cannot respond to their latest shambles by yet again simply clicking their fingers and shuffling the people at the top without the consent of the British people,” said Labour leader Keir Starmer.

“They do not have a mandate to put the country through yet another experiment – Britain is not their personal fiefdom to run how they wish.

“We must have a chance at a fresh start. We need a general election – now.”

Truss’s tenure is the shortest of any prime minister in British history, but she will be entitled to severance pay of £18,860 for leaving the job.
