Here’s how you can get your MP to back our Future Generations Pledge

We’re launching The Big Issue’s Future Generations Pledge this week – and we need your help to get MPs to back it.

Labour’s Jess Phillips, Luciana Berger of the Lib Dems and the Greens’ Caroline Lucas have all thrown their weight behind the pledge, which asks politicians to ensure that decisions they make today prevent the potential problems of the future from ever materialising.

While we wait for Lord John Bird to reintroduce the Future Generations Bill when parliament returns after the election, we need you to get in touch with the political candidates in your area to ask them to take the pledge.

THE BIG ISSUE’S FUTURE GENERATIONS PLEDGE

“If elected as a Member of Parliament on December 12 2019, I pledge to use my voice, and my vote, to:

1. ACT TODAY FOR TOMORROW

Working to prevent problems, including the climate crisis and poverty, from happening instead of dealing in short-term, political emergencies.

2. RESPECT THE NEEDS OF FUTURE GENERATIONS

Taking their needs into account in new policies, budgets and laws, giving them a seat at the table.

3. BACK THE FUTURE GENERATIONS BILL

Delivering a new, sustainable vision for the nation that prioritises the environmental, social, economic and cultural wellbeing of current and future generations.”

Ask the candidates standing to be your MP to take The Big Issue’s Future Generations Pledge today:

1. Enter your postcode online at whocanivotefor.co.uk
2. Select a local candidate(s) from the list
3. Send them a message via email, Facebook or Twitter asking them to take The Big Issue Future Generations Pledge

What should I say in my messages?

1. Tell them you’re writing as a local voter ahead of the upcoming election
2. Direct them to this page to read The Big Issue Future Generations Pledge
3. Call on them to take the pledge and show their support on social media

How can we show our support?

Share the pledge on social media to show you’re backing the campaign and encourage everyone you know to contact their would-be MPs too. Use the hashtag #todayfortomorrow in any posts you share, and make sure you tag your candidates.

Forward any replies from candidates to hello@todayfortomorrow.org.uk. If you contact candidates on social media, tag @Today4Tmrrw or the hashtag #todayfortomorrow in your posts and replies.
