Luciana Berger has taken The Big Issue’s Future Generations Pledge

We need you to make sure your local MP is doing the same to ensure that they also consider the impact of decisions made in the present on those growing up in the future

We’re asking MPs to back our Future Generations Pledge and we need your help to ensure that every candidate running in the December election gets behind it.

New pledgers would be following in the footsteps of Luciana Berger, the former Labour MP and now the Liberal Democrats’ candidate for Finchley and Golders Green.

She became one of the first politicians to throw her weight behind the pledge when we launched it last week.

Berger said: “I believe it is incumbent on us to leave our children with a better world than the one we came into, and as someone who is committed to sustainable solutions to critical issues like the climate crisis and poverty, I wholly support the Future Generations Pledge.”

The pledge comes as Big Issue founder Lord John Bird has been forced to restart his bid to create a Future Generations Act across the UK.

Inspired by the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) 2015, Lord Bird launched his bid for a Future Generations Bill when it was introduced to the House of Lords last month but has been forced to go back to step one after Parliament was dissolved for the election.

The bill will restart its journey through both Houses once Parliament returns. In the meantime, we need you to get in touch with the political candidates in your area to ask them to take the pledge.

What does the pledge say?

THE BIG ISSUE’S FUTURE GENERATIONS PLEDGE

“If elected as a Member of Parliament on December 12 2019, I pledge to use my voice, and my vote, to:

ACT TODAY FOR TOMORROW

Working to prevent problems, including the climate crisis and poverty, from happening instead of dealing in short-term, political emergencies.

RESPECT THE NEEDS OF FUTURE GENERATIONS

Taking their needs into account in new policies, budgets and laws, giving them a seat at the table.

BACK THE FUTURE GENERATIONS BILL

Delivering a new, sustainable vision for the nation that prioritises the environmental, social, economic and cultural wellbeing of current and future generations.”

How can you get your MP to back the pledge?

Contact your local candidate and encourage them to back the pledge – and forward any replies to hello@todayfortomorrow.org.uk. If you contact candidates on social media, tag @Today4Tmrrw or the hashtag #todayfortomorrow in your posts and replies.

Share the pledge on social media to show you’re backing the campaign and encourage everyone you know to contact their would-be MPs too. Use the hashtag #todayfortomorrow in any posts you share, and make sure you tag your candidates.
