MPs are going to get a £2,200 pay rise in April

Both Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer have said MPs should not have their pay increased.

MPs will get a pay rise of £2,212 in April, taking their annual pay to £84,144 – their first increase since the pandemic.

Pay has been frozen for members of parliament since 2020 but will increase by 2.7 per cent in the next financial year.

Both prime minister Boris Johnson and Labour leader Keir Starmer warned against increasing MPs’ pay in January,

The hike comes as a 3 per cent pay rise is being offered to NHS staff.

The pay rise is calculated to match the average increase in public sector earnings, and is implemented by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority.

Starmer said in January: “I think that MPs do not need a pay rise and we should all be saying that we don’t need that pay rise and it shouldn’t go ahead,”

Richard Lloyd, chair of IPSA, said: “This is the first increase in pay for MPs in two years and follows the average of increases across the public sector last year.

“MPs play a vital role in our democracy and this is reflected in their pay. It is right that MPs are paid fairly for the responsibility and the unseen work they do helping their constituents, which dramatically increased last year.

“For Parliament to reflect society, it is vital that people from all walks of life can be an MP.”
