Big Issue calls on kids to get creative with Earth Day cover competition judged by Chris Packham

The environmentalist is judging this year’s Big Issue cover competition, with the winning design set to emblazon its Earth Day special in April

Monday 24 February – Under 13s have been invited to submit their art to a new competition and be in with a chance of seeing it emblazon an upcoming special edition of the Big Issue.

Environmentalist TV presenter Chris Packham will choose the winning cover art for an upcoming Earth Day edition of the Big Issue, going on sale on Monday 14 April.

A previous winning cover design.

Big Issue is looking for a cover in the theme of “Go Wild”, with submissions encouraged to “highlight how important a healthy planet is to all of us”. Participants could draw what they think the world will look like in the future, showcase ideas that will save the environment, or take the opportunity to share an amazing picture of the natural world.

Chris Packham said: “I love cover art! Singles, LPs, books… think of your favourites! When young people step up with pens, paints and paper their imaginations and style always create bold, bright, eye-catching and communicative designs.

“Nothing is more important right now than rapidly drawing attention to the urgent plight of our planet – it’s our biggest issue. So I can’t wait to see all the entries in the Big Issue Kids Cover Competition. But I predict that finding one winner is going to be very hard!”

Paul McNamee, UK Editor of the Big Issue, said: “Our cover competitions have received thousands of entries over the years, all vying for the coveted space on the front of the Big Issue. For 2025, we’re marking the arrival of Spring and tying it to the increasingly important Earth Day – and who better to judge the environmental creativity of our young artists than the legendary Chris Packham?
