Big Issue founder kicks off UK cinema tour of ‘Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son’

Lord John Bird will join select Q&A panels when Lorna Tucker’s acclaimed documentary tours Picturehouse Cinemas, starting with Southampton in April.

Today (Monday 18 March) Big Issue Group has announced its founder Lord John Bird will tour selected Picturehouse Cinemas with the feature documentary Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker and newly inaugurated Big Issue ambassador Lorna Tucker, Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son was released to UK cinemas last month to critical acclaim. Lorna spent two years living on the streets as a teenager, sleeping under Waterloo Bridge, and her documentary explores her lived experience of homelessness.

Lord John Bird, who is a crossbench peer in the House of Lords, features prominently in the film, sharing his personal account of homelessness and how he set up the Big Issue to give people in poverty a way to earn an income. He’s now touring with the documentary to shine further light on the issues facing rough sleepers and others living in poverty.

The first of Lord Bird’s Q&As will take place at Southampton’s Harbour Lights on Wednesday 3 April, with subsequent appearances scheduled for Hackney Picturehouse on Wednesday 17 April and Cinema City in Norwich on Wednesday 8 May.

Lord Bird said: “It’s fantastic that Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son is back for a new run in selected Picturehouse cinemas, and I’m excited to go on the road with this truly landmark film.

“Lorna Tucker has used her unique voice and lived experience to create a documentary that casts light on the extreme issues facing those at the coalface of poverty. It’s a rallying cry to the people of this country, and I hope these Q&As up the noise further and energise our audiences to support our mission to end homelessness.”
