Inside the Big Issue: Attenborough at 100

David Attenborough is 100. In this special issue, we celebrate other noteworthy centenarians of 2026, from Mel Brooks to Marilyn Monroe.

On 8 May, the natural historian and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough turns 100 – and Big Issue wishes him a very happy birthday!

To mark this milestone event, Big Issue Ambassador Chris Packham has written about the unassailable legacy of his friend and role model.

“I’m going to go straight to the hyperbole… I don’t think that any person in the entire history of our species has made such a significant contribution to engaging people and developing a love for all of life on Earth as David Attenborough,” Packham writes.

Plus we celebrate other noteworthy centenarians of 2026, from Mel Brooks to Marilyn Monroe. Buy an issue from your local vendor today!

What else is in this week’s Big Issue?

The 100 year old artist still going strong

You could easily mistake Rene Robbins’ living room for a small art gallery. The walls of her first-floor apartment are adorned with colourful mixed media artworks, all of which were created by her in the last 20 years. The centenarian started making art after an experience with homelessness.

The 1926 General Strike

This month sees the centenary of Britain’s only General Strike. Some two million workers walked off the job in support of the country’s coal miners, who had refused to accept wage cuts imposed by their employers.

Marilyn Monroe at 100: A Hollywood icon and smart thinker

Marilyn Monroe was born on 1 June 1926. One hundred years later, her face is everywhere: on posters, fashion campaigns, merchandise and in the work of artists who have never stopped returning to her image. Why does she remain so compelling?
