Big Issue’s Kids Cover Competition is back for Earth Day – judged by the legendary Chris Packham

Calling all creative kids, we are thrilled to announce the Big Issue’s Kids Cover Competition is back!

Our Big Issue Christmas Kids Cover Competition is a much-loved annual tradition celebrated by families, schools and other youth groups across Britain. In recent times, we have received thousands of entries, all vying for the coveted space on the Big Issue Christmas edition cover. We decided to pause the competition in 2024 because we had a new idea to bring you.

We’re delighted to reveal that we are running the competition this SPRING. Our Spring Kids Cover Competition is officially open and running through until April. We are tying it to the increasingly important Earth Day, which follows on 22 April. So we want the cover to highlight how important a healthy planet is to all of us.

You could draw what you think the world will look like in the future, showcase ideas that will save the environment, or take the opportunity to share an amazing picture of the natural world, be it an impressive tree in your local area or your favourite animal – from an Easter bunny to an endangered species you’d see on safari. So this year’s theme is GO WILD – and that’s exactly what we want you to do with your designs.

Who better to judge the young artists in this environmental fun than the legendary naturalist, TV presenter and author Chris Packham?

“I love cover art!,” he tells us. “Singles, LPs, books… think of your favourites! When young people step up with pens, paints and paper their imaginations and style always create bold, bright, eye-catching and communicative designs.

“Nothing is more important right now than rapidly drawing attention to the urgent plight of our planet – it’s our biggest issue. So I can’t wait to see all the entries in the Big Issue’s Kids Cover Competition.

“But I predict that finding one winner is going to be very hard!”

The winning cover will be on sale across Britain from Monday 14 April. It comes just ahead of Easter this year, so there are plenty of ideas to provide a bright, bold and really wild front cover! We can’t return artworks, but will print as many pictures as we can squeeze onto the page. All entries will also feature in our online gallery

How to enter

To get involved, look out your pens, pencils, paints or graphic design apps and create a picture that will blow us away. Go wild! Please use an A4 or an A3 sheet and make sure the drawing is portrait not landscape (that means the drawing is tall rather than wide). Make sure to include the words: BIG ISSUE on the drawing and send it to us by 28 March

The competition is open to anybody up to the age of 13. If you happen to be older than that, then tell your young friends and relatives all about it.

There will be an individual winner who will see their design on the cover, plus special recognition for the best group entry. There is no limit to the number of entries from a group.

Send all entries with a name, age, address and telephone or email contact to us by 28 March.
