Supermarket giant Morrisons has announced a food donation appeal to “restock the nation’s food banks” following an unprecedented rise in demand during the pandemic.
The economic fallout from Covid-19 has forced a record number of people to turn to food banks for support, and the Trussell Trust charity expect a 61 per cent increase in the number of food parcels needed this winter.
Experts have warned thousands are at risk of going hungry and “falling through the cracks” of Universal Credit as those on middle-incomes see their wages slashed during the pandemic.
Rebecca Singleton, community director at the supermarket, said: “We have worked with food banks across the UK to identify the key items that are most needed by the vulnerable in our communities.
“The UK’s food banks are a lifeline for many people and we want to make it easier for customers to donate so that no one is left behind this Christmas.”
