Liam Gallagher is urging you to give up your parka for homeless people

The Oasis icon is the most high-profile person fronting a coat appeal as Wrap Up campaigns across the country ask you to donate your coat to help people through the winter

The temperatures are starting to plummet and the annual plea for coats to help homeless people stay warm this winter has begun – but this year rock’n’roll star Liam Gallagher is getting involved.

Famous for his signature parka coat Gallagher announced on his Instagram that he wanted more parkas from the audience on his new UK tour.

But instead of adding them to his, no doubt, extensive collection, the Mancunian is asking for donations to keep homeless people warm in the winter. All the donations will help homelessness charities Shelter and Centrepoint as well as Aberdeen Cyrenians on the Scottish leg of the tour and Dublin’s Inner City Helping Homeless.

Gallagher posted on Instagram: “Calling all Parka Monkeys. No one plans on being homeless. Yet 5,000 people in the UK sleep on the streets on any given night. We’re asking you to help this winter by donating a coat or parka.

“In return for your donation, you’ll have the chance to win a pair of tickets, plus a meet and greet with Liam (one winner for each show on the UK Nov tour).”

The move is a welcome one – but Gallagher is only the latest to take up a coat appeal.

One of the biggest is the Wrap Up appeal, which is running around the UK this month.

Kicking off with the London appeal nine years ago, donations are now being accepted in Manchester, Glasgow, Leicester, across Lancashire and Cumbria, Brighton and Hove, Essex, Cardiff, Newport, Wellingborough, Uxbridge and Bath as well as in the English capital. For more details on how to get involved with Wrap Up, head here.

And keep an eye out for another Gallagher brother getting involved – Noel’s exclusively in The Big Issue magazine next week. Get your copy from vendors or The Big Issue Shop on Monday.
