Inside the Big Issue: Peter Capaldi on dirty cop drama Criminal Record and his new grandson

In this week’s Big Issue we peel back the layers of beloved actor Peter Capaldi, who has just welcomed a grandson

In this week’s Big Issue we peel back the layers of beloved actor Peter Capaldi. From The Thick of It to Doctor Who, his latest role is as a detective in what could just be your new TV police drama obsession, Criminal Record.

He also has a new role closer to home. “I’ve just had a new grandson arrive,” he tells us. “So our house is a bit chaotic and full of babies at the moment.”

Heading into 2024, Capaldi has a message for all of us.

“I want peace for everybody. I want everyone to stop sniping at each other from these polarised positions and to take more time to consider other people and opinions. It’s just out of control this polarisation everywhere. And politically it’s very useful because it’s just dividing us all. And we all have way more in common. So we have to change things.”

Women feel ‘violated’ after facing severe pain in hysteroscopies. They claim the NHS misinformed them

Caroline remembers screaming. It was like an electric shock which went from her neck to her toes. It was like being tasered in her most intimate area. She could not move because she was scared. She called out
to the doctor to stop.

“I can’t believe what happened to me was done in an NHS hospital,” Caroline, 56, says. “I feel that if they were wearing black balaclavas it would have suited what I experienced more. I felt like I was subjected to a very violent assault. That is the trauma that I’m dealing with now.”

Ralph Nader ran for president in 2000. He didn’t win – but here’s how he’s shaped America

It’s difficult to be an elder statesman of American politics when the president is 81 and his main rival is 77.

But at 89, the activist, author, podcaster and three-time presidential candidate Ralph Nader has been orbiting the political system for six decades. For this week’s Big Issue magazine, he discusses – and what this year’s election will mean for the world.

From an early age LeAnn Rimes had the guts to stand up for what she wanted, but it still took her a lifetime to learn how to say no. In this week’s Letter to My Younger Self, the singer talks about how she got there – and how to stay true to yourself.
